Information
The original purpose for developing the breed was for hunting game on both, land and water. The Flat-Coated Retriever is still used with that aim and today. It is also a wonderful companion for those people, looking for an active and super therapy dog.
Flat-coated Retriever Temperament and Personality
This breed is not only full of energy, but it is also reliable and obedient dog. These dogs are wonderful, entertaining companions due to the reason that they do not mature as quickly as other breeds do, and their puppy-like period could continue for several years. This means that you will have more fun with them, but you will also need more patience and extra time when training them.
Flat-Coated Retriever is a great dog for big families, and families with children, because this dog loves everyone. Perhaps because they love people and other dogs, they are not actually reliable guard dogs, but they are great friends.
They generally have calm temperament, but although they behave will when indoors, apartment life does not actually fit them well. They have exercise needs, so you will have to run, walk or do some kind of activity with the dog for at least a couple of 45-minutes sessions. The Retriever prefers to be with the members of the family every time when this is possible, so it also likes relaxing next to his owners.
Training
You will need to start with training your dog of this breed as soon as you bring it home. They are quick and obedient learners, so all you need is a little patience. Do not use physical corrections; otherwise the dog will stop working for you. Use the technique of positive reinforcement and be kind to your dog.
Grooming
The coat of the Flat-Coated Retriever is straight, moderately long and protects the dog really well from the harsh environmental conditions. And it is also easy for maintaining, it needs only weekly brushing, and bathe when it is needed.
